Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust covers a large area encompassing Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, Kennet and North Wiltshire, West and South Wiltshire, and is organised into 5 Strategic Business Units: Adult Services, Older People’s Services, Child & Adolescent Services, Specialist & Secure Services and Drugs & Alcohol Services.
This 10 session Consultant post is the result of a new initiative to provide liaison psychiatric services to older patients who are receiving inpatient care across Bristol and South Gloucestershire Primary Care Trusts. Based at Southmead Hospital, with proactive in-reach into Bristol Royal Infirmary and Frenchay Hospitals, you will be responsible for the assessment and management of inpatients with complex health care needs including co-morbid physical and psychiatric illness. This will involve working closely with the Team Manager and the Clinical Director to ensure the effective development and deployment of provisions as well as building a collaborative approach with acute and community mental health service. You will be expected to supervise medical staff and undertake educational initiatives to raise awareness in the general hospital setting. Supporting and participating in clinical governance and audit will be routine. You will be encouraged to develop an area of special clinical interest in line with service needs. The on call responsibility is currently 1 in 20.
You will be experienced in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric problems in older people and be practised in dealing with crisis situations. An excellent working knowledge of psychopharmacological, psychotherapeutic and psychosocial interventions is fundamental. You should demonstrate outstanding leadership and listening skills, with the capacity to sensitively challenge others. The ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team is essential as is the requirement to illustrate your management achievements when interfacing with teams. You should possess, or be eligible to apply for, Section 12 approval and be qualified for inclusion on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of gaining CCT.
